Modern Icarus: AR Oil Painting for Abebe Bikila's Album

AKQA Coala.LAB transformed the myth of Icarus into a digital art experience for Abebe Bikila's new album, using an 2x2m oil painting with AR technology. The artwork, inspired by Jacob Peter Gowy's 1636 painting, combines photogrammetry, motion capture, and LIDAR to create a dynamic, immersive narrative. The vernissage, activated via geolocation, allowed fans to interact with the painting and witness BK’ singing an unreleased track. The project highlights the intersection of art, technology, and music, offering a modern interpretation of the classic tale. The music video further explores themes of ambition, corruption, and the duality of human nature, featuring mythological figures like Hélio, Medusa, and the Minotaur, symbolizing the dangers of unchecked desire and the allure of urban life.
