Ugly Mugs NL: Safeguarding Sex Workers Through Anonymous Alerts
Ugly Mugs NL, a free online platform for sex workers in the Netherlands, addresses the critical issue of violence against sex workers. Research by Soa Aids Nederland and Proud revealed that 97% of sex workers in the Netherlands experience violence, yet only 21% report it to the police. This gap is exacerbated by the lack of proper documentation and the higher risk faced by transgender and male sex workers. Ugly Mugs NL aims to bridge this gap by enabling sex workers to report incidents anonymously and receive targeted alerts. The platform, developed in collaboration with Soa Aids Nederland and Proud, offers a secure and discreet way for sex workers to stay safe and informed. The platform uses a unique approach, allowing users to report violence via a dedicated form, which is then converted into an anonymous warning on the website. Registered sex workers receive SMS and email alerts about potential threats in their vicinity. By reducing the barrier to reporting and providing targeted alerts, Ugly Mugs NL empowers sex workers to protect themselves while ensuring their safety and privacy. This innovative solution has significantly improved the ability of sex workers to report violence, contributing to a safer environment for all.
